The National Museum of China is a comprehensive museum that pays equal attention to both history and art and systematically displays the long cultural history of the Chinese nation and world civilization. It was established on February 28, 2003 on the basis of the merger of the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution. It is directly under the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China. The predecessor of the Museum of Chinese History was the Preparatory Office of the National Museum of History, which was established on July 9, 1912. On October 1, 1949, the same day as the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was renamed the "National Museum of Beijing History", and in 1959 it was renamed the "Museum of Chinese History". The predecessor of the Chinese Revolutionary Museum is the Preparatory Office of the National Revolutionary Museum, which was established in March 1950. It was officially named "Museum of the Chinese Revolution" in 1960. In August 1959, the Liangguan Building, located on the east side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, was completed as one of the top ten buildings for the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. On October 1 of the same year, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the National Day, it began to open to the outside world.
The National Museum of China adheres to the concept of "people-oriented" construction and development, and takes "close to reality, close to life and close to the masses" as its principle. It adheres to the direction of "commensurate with the status of a big country like ours, with the long history and splendid civilization of the Chinese nation, with the vigorous development of socialist modernization, and with the growing spiritual and cultural needs of the broad masses of the people". The goal of building the museum is "leading in China and first-class in the world". It adheres to the principle of "talent library, collection library, business library and academic library".
Long history and magnificent architecture
The predecessor of the National Museum of China can be traced back to the Preparatory Office of the National Museum of History, which was established in the first year of the Republic of China (1912). After several renaming and expansion, it was finally merged by the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution in 2003. The new museum was renovated and expanded in 2012 and officially opened to the public. Its building retains the west, north and south facades of the original old building. The overall design is simple and solemn. The cube shape implies that the cultural relics collected by the museum witness all aspects of Chinese civilization. With a total land area of 70000 square meters and a building area of nearly 200000 square meters, it is the largest single building area museum in the world.
A rich collection of cultural relics
The National Museum of China has a collection of 1.06 million pieces, covering precious cultural relics from prehistoric to modern historical stages. There are many national treasures in these collections, such as bronze wares such as Wu Ding, Shang Siyang Bronze Square Zun and Li Zun, as well as pottery basins with human faces and fish patterns in the Neolithic Age and pottery figurines with drums and singing in the Eastern Han Dynasty.
