Shanghai Yu Garden is located in the northeast of Shanghai Yu Garden Tourism and Commercial District, adjacent to Shanghai City God Temple and Shanghai Yu Garden Tourism Mall. It is a well-known Jiangnan classical garden and a famous scenic spot and historical site in China and abroad. In 1982, it was approved by the State Council as a "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit". Yu Garden was first built during the Jiajing and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty, and has a history of more than 450 years. The owner of the garden, Pan Yunduan, was once the governor of Sichuan. In order to let his father enjoy his old age, Pan Yunduan gathered stones to dig a pond, built pavilions and bamboos, and built a garden on his own vegetable field since the year of Jiwei in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1559). After more than 20 years of painstaking management, Yu Garden was built. "Yu" means "peace" and "safety", and the name "Yu Garden" means "Yu is happy for the old relatives". When Yu Garden was first built, it covered an area of ??more than 70 acres. It was carefully designed by Zhang Nanyang, a famous garden designer in the Ming Dynasty, and he personally participated in the construction. The entire garden is magnificent and beautiful. Yu Garden now covers an area of ??2 hectares, with pavilions, rugged mountains and rocks, and lush trees. It is known for its quiet beauty, exquisiteness, and the characteristics of seeing the big in the small, reflecting the artistic style of Jiangnan garden architecture in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Yu Garden still preserves historical sites such as the "Book Collection Building", the birthplace of "Shanghai School of Painting and Calligraphy", and the "Dianchun Hall", where the headquarters of the Shanghai Small Knife Society Uprising was located. Ancient people of all dynasties praised Yu Garden as "the most beautiful in the southeast" and "the most famous garden in the southeast".
